The Best Faith-Based Children’s Book Series

January 25, 2023

Over the last few years, since entering motherhood, I have accumulated many, many faith-based children’s books. Some have earned their keep on our shelves, and others have gotten donated, either because of a difference in beliefs or just simply a lack of quality. To be honest, it’s usually the latter. While I know authors mean well, a fair amount of faith-based children’s books are shallow, teaching only that God loves you and wants you to act good for your parents (which is true, but isn’t even the tip of the iceberg). Thankfully, a faith-based children’s book that we’ve loved for years, and one of the first we ever received, was the beginning of a series that continues on to this day, and it’s the series that I would deem the best faith-based children’s book series for young kids.

The best faith-based children's book series is beautifully illustrated, creatively written, and teaches powerful truths of God's Word!

The Baby Believer Primers by Catechesis Books are written by Danielle Hitchen and illustrated by Jessica Blanchard. The purpose of this faith-based children’s book series is to “help you teach your children the central tenets of the Christian faith that they may never know a day apart from the Lord.“ They currently have 9 books in this series, with more set for publication in the next several years. Bonus: their first book, First Bible Basics, is also available in Spanish! All of these books deliver messages straight from Scripture, coupled with absolutely beautiful illustrations. And since they’re board books, they’re friendly for all ages!

First Bible Basics: A Counting Primer

Consider this book your basic introduction to Christianity. From “one God” to “ten commandments,” this book covers topics ranging from the Pentateuch to the fruits of the Spirit to the “I Ams” of Jesus. First Bible Basics is a great basic book to teach kids who God is and the elementary tenets of the Bible.

Psalms of Praise: A Movement Primer

This book is just fun! Ten different movements are covered (walk, run, jump, dance, etc.) and a psalm is included for each movement (“With God’s help, I can JUMP over a wall!”). My kids love the colorful illustrations and showing how high they can jump, how well they can clap, and more. Psalms of Praise would be a great “brain-break” book, as it’s perfect to get kids moving. And of course, they’re hearing the Word at the same time. Win, win!

Holy Week: An Emotions Primer

A beautiful addition to the season of lent, and also wonderful to use year-round, Holy Week presents the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry, trial, death, and resurrection in a unique way: peering into the emotions of each step along the way. Frustration, excitement, overwhelm, and surprise are just a few of the emotions discussed in this book. Holy Week is an excellent way to open up the door to your kids about conversations regarding emotions, by showing that Jesus experienced many of these emotions Himself.

We Believe: An Alphabet Primer

This is a great book for preschool and elementary-age kids; for each letter, there is a word or phrase that relates to the Bible, the church, or the Christian faith. Paired with each word or phrase is a verse or excerpt from a traditional creed. This isn’t just a basic primer, either; A isn’t for Adam – it’s for ascension. Z stands for Zion, U is part of Eucharist, and K is for Kyrie Eleison – a traditional church phrase meaning “Lord, have mercy.” We Believe goes deep and is an excellent addition to your family’s discipleship efforts.

Let There Be Light: An Opposites Primer

If I could describe this book in one word, it would be pretty. I love how it discusses the concept of opposites – light and dark, large and small, alone and together – but the illustrations are what take it across the finish line for me. Jessica Blanchard does an incredible job of illustrating the beauty of God’s creation in a realistic yet creative manner. And we can’t forget, each page also includes a connecting scripture, which ties the story of creation together. Let There Be Light is educational, visually-appealing, and theologically sound. You can’t get much better than that.

From Eden To Bethlehem: An Animals Primer

If I was going to pick one book that I think would become your child’s favorite, it would be this one. Kids love animals, and I love that From Eden To Bethlehem shows how animals play such a big role throughout the Bible, and also how they are used in so many analogies in the Word. And not to keep harping on the illustrations, but the images of the animals in this book are some of my favorites in the whole series.

Psalms 23: A Colors Primer

Creating a colors primer from Psalms 23 is such a unique take on what some consider an overused passage of Scripture. Each page spread includes a verse from the passage and is paired with a color, which overshadows much of the spread. As the children learn, “He makes me lie down in green pastures,” they see a green meadow filled with green flowers and trees, with green mountains in the distance. The illustrations are so pleasing to the eye and truly tie the whole book and passage together.

Our God: A Shapes Primer

Our God introduces kids to (you guessed it) God, and the many shapes and ways He is described to us in Scripture: the Bread of Life, that He hears us, the Rock eternal. With each of these concepts is included a literal shape: an oval for bread, a semicircle for the ear (hearing), a circle for rock. I’ve never seen a book teach shapes in this way, and Our God really solidifies the concept of shapes and the paired scripture within the minds of our littlest learners.

Jesus Heals: An Anatomy Primer

Picking a favorite Baby Believer book is almost impossible, but I think this one takes the cake for me. How powerful it is to teach our kids, from a very young age, that Jesus actually healed people physically, and also that He healed us, spiritually-speaking, through His death on the Cross. These are the truths that our littles need to hear – and Jesus Heals brings them in full force. Pair that with each healing demonstrating a part of the body, and excellent illustrations of course, and you’ve got a book that even the parents won’t want to put down.

If the Baby Believer Primers aren’t part of your collection, add them to your list today! Your kids will grow in their faith and knowledge of the Word of God as you read them these books. They’ll love the illustrations, too. The vision behind Baby Believers is for kids to never know a day apart from the Lord, and with this faith-based children’s book series in your home, that’s absolutely possible. Happy reading!
