8 Powerful Verses To Pray During Pregnancy

February 6, 2023

Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman’s life. Whether you’re carrying your first child, your fourth, or your fourteenth, the feeling of baby kicks and hearing their heartbeat for the first time is unmatched. Carrying a child in your womb is a special honor, and it is not one to be taken lightly. The Word of God says that children are a gift and a reward (Psalm 127:3). While in your womb, your child begins to develop physically, emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. Knowing this, we need to take special care to pray for our unborn children, and pray that they would begin to be strengthened spiritually before they even enter the world. Here’s some wonderful verses to pray during pregnancy.

These verses to pray during pregnancy will speak truth and life over your baby from the very beginning of life. Nothing is more important!

Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

What a powerful concept! Before God even formed the child in your womb, He knew them. And before they are born, He is consecrating them, or setting them apart as holy. He is appointing them as a prophet for Him, and preparing good works for them to do (Ephesians 2:10). They need to know that! They need to know that God Almighty knows them and is caring for them, even before they’re born. And you get to be the one to teach them that, through your prayers and through verbally speaking it over them. What an honor!

Isaiah 61:1

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord anointed me to bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to captives and freedom to prisoners…”

This is a calling that lies deep within each one of us – the calling that the Lord has anointed us to preach the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ into all the world (Matthew 28:16-20), and to set free those who are trapped in sin. And that calling already exists deep inside the little baby growing inside of you, even when they’re no bigger than a lemon. Isn’t God amazing? By praying this verse over your child, you are confirming within them what their soul already knows – that the Spirit of God is upon them and that they are anointed by their Creator. I can think of no greater truth to start out with in life.

Psalm 91:9-12

“For you have made the Lord, my refuge, the Most High, your dwelling place. No evil will happen to you, nor will any plague come near your tent. For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. On their hands they will lift you up, so that you do not strike your foot against a stone.”

I love this promise of God! When we dwell in Him and make Him our refuge, evil cannot come near us, and He sends angels to protect us. That’s what I want for me AND my kids! Begin praying this over your unborn child and give them the mindset and the confidence to know that when they choose to follow God, He is their Protector.

1 Samuel 1:27

For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my request which I asked of Him.

Let’s start by saying that of course we can apply this verse to girls as well as boys. Children, regardless of whether they are in the womb or in our arms, need to know that they are wanted and cared for. This verse declares over them that you love them, you have prayed for them, and you are thankful that God has answered that prayer. Feeling wanted and loved starts here – in the womb.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. All that you do must be done in love.

It’s never too early to start talking about character development, right? This is how I want my children to act – loving, alert, firm in their faith, strong, acting like men and women of God. Praying and speaking those words over them may not seem important or necessary in the womb, but their soul is developing just like their body, and it needs guidance. The placenta feeds the body; it’s our job, as praying parents, to feed the soul.

Numbers 6:24-26

“The Lord bless you, and keep you; the Lord cause His face to shine on you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His face to you, and give you peace.”

This verse is the Aaronic blessing – the way in which God told Aaron and his sons (the priests) to bless the Israelites. If this blessing was special enough to come from the mouth of God straight to His chosen people, the Israelites, then it is certainly a blessing that I want to pray over my unborn baby. I want all of this for them in their life, and I want them to know it from the very beginning. (This is also the blessing we read over our children in our morning blessing time. Read more about that here.)

Psalm 16:11

“You will make known to me the way of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”

Yes, Lord – may you show my child the way of life, give them fullness of joy, and fulfill them with pleasures forever. What a powerful blessing over any child, born or unborn. Our job as parents is to lead them to the Lord and to help them never know a day apart from His truth. That starts with praying verses like this one during pregnancy.

Ephesians 3:16-19

“…that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.”

What better gift could you give your child than for them to know the love of Christ and the fullness of God, even while in the womb? I can’t think of anything more perfect for a Jesus kid. Speaking this directly over your child in prayer is extremely powerful, as you are speaking these truths straight into their soul. Your influence starts early, mama!

These verses to pray during pregnancy aren’t just words on a page. They are the breath of God, and they are able to speak life and truth over your baby from the very beginning of their life – in the womb! Don’t miss this opportunity.
