16 Must-Have Faith-Based Media Options for Christian Families

July 14, 2022

Our children are growing up in a media-saturated world, there’s no doubt about that. Movies, music, books, TV shows, video games, apps, and more seem to be around every corner. And unfortunately, much of that media is filled with socio-political ideas, bad language, and false teachings. Thankfully, there are better options out there that will teach them the truth of God’s Word. As parents, we need to invest our time, energy, and finances into these high-quality, faith-based media options. Not only is that the best choice for our families, but it also supports the makers and allows them to create even more media for us to enjoy. I’m highlighting a few of my favorites faith-based media options below, and I’d love to hear your favorites, as well.

Faith-Based Shows

We have very high standards for movies and TV shows in our house, especially if they claim to be faith-based. Teachings on morality or shallow Bible stories aren’t what we choose to watch; we aim to show our kids movies that teach them who God and Jesus are, what the gospel is all about, and how much they are loved by the Creator. With that being said, here’s my top 5 faith-based shows for kids.

1. Little Image-Bearers

Little Image-Bearers uses real world people, places, and things to teach kids who God is and how much He loves them. It also illustrates big concepts using narrative stories in the puppet pretend world. On top of that, kids learn different crafts and activities, and all of this ties into a biblical concept woven throughout each episode. I love this show because it lays a solid foundation of biblical and spiritual truths that even young kids can understand. Plus, the puppets are super fun!

You can find Little Image-Bearers on digital or DVD.

2. The Wonderful World of Benjamin Cello

The Wonderful World of Benjamin Cello is essentially a faith-based live-action mix of Mister Rogers and Mary Poppins, with a heavy dose of Scripture thrown in. It features a delightful male lead, Benjamin Cello, who (no surprise here) plays the cello. In each episode, he has a few moments in his home, then he enters The Land of the Baptized Imagination to visit his different friends. Each episode includes multiple musical numbers, many of which are directly from Scripture. I love this show because it’s fun, very strong in biblical teachings, and enjoyable for adults to watch along with their kids.

You can watch The Wonderful World of Benjamin Cello on digital.

3. Owlegories

Owlegories is an animated show that follows the adventures of 5 different owls who are in school to learn about God’s Word. In each episode, they are sent on a mission to learn a truth about God. They make mistakes along the way (of course), and come back to their professor at the end to figure out the truth. I love this show because the episodes are short, the characters are fun, and the biblical concepts are taught at a child-friendly level.

Owlegories is available for you to view on Amazon Prime or DVD.

4. Superbook

Superbook is one of the best faith-based media options I’ve found for Christian parents. It teaches full Bible stories with direct quotes from Scripture. Each animated episode starts with two friends, Chris and Joy, and Chris’ robot Gizmo in some sort of predicament. They are then transported by Superbook into a Bible story that teaches them a lesson to help them with their problem. At the end, they come back to their real life and use the biblical concept that they just experienced to solve their problem. I love this show because the Bible stories are taught very well. My 5 year old can recount these stories in great detail and has learned big concepts about God from the show.

Warning: Superbook tells some stories that, although biblical, may be frightening for sensitive viewers, such as Lucifer being thrown out of Heaven, or the battle in Revelation. Be sure to preview any media before showing it to your children.

You can watch Superbook on Amazon Prime or DVD.

5. Torchlighters

Torchlighters is an animated series produced by Voice of the Martyrs. Each episode tells the story of a specific hero of the faith, many of whom died while sharing the gospel. These are real life people who lived extraordinary stories to advance the Kingdom of God, and their stories are captivating. I love this show because it exposes my kids to people who they can look up to, and it teaches that following God is not always easy, but it’s still worth it.

You can find Torchlighters on digital or DVD.

Faith-Based Books

We are a book-loving family. It’s pretty easy to find Bible-based books these days, even at Dollar Tree or similar stores, but how many are actually high-quality books that deliver the heart of the gospel? Not as many as you would think. Here’s my top 4 Bible-based books/series for kids.

1. Tales That Tell The Truth

An ever-growing series of books published by The Good Book Company, Tales That Tell The Truth deliver the powerful messages of the gospel on a level that kids can comprehend. Their teachings on the fall of man, sin, and forgiveness have been impactful even in my own life as an adult. I love these books because they don’t water down the gospel, and they always point to Jesus as the Savior.

You can find the Tales That Tell The Truth Series on The Good Book Company website or most places books are sold.

2. Baby Believer Primers

Currently a series of 8 books (with more in production), the Baby Believer books seek to teach kids the basics of the Christian faith through numbers, letters, opposites, shapes, and more. They deliver big truths in a way that little minds can understand. They also include beautiful illustrations and offer related resources, such as coloring pages and flash cards, on their website. I love these books because they do an amazing job of teaching kids the basics of the Bible alongside the basics of education (they’re an excellent homeschool resource!).

You can buy the Baby Believer Primers on the Catechesis Books website or most places books are sold.

3. Generation Claimed

These board books have quickly become a favorite of mine. They speak bold truths over the reader, with a Scripture to back up each one. They also relay the promises of God and speak blessings over children. I can’t think of anything more I would want in a book. I love these books because they are biblically sound and give me a tool to speak life over my children.

The Generation Claimed books are available on their website or many places books are sold.

4. The Creator In You

This book is nothing short of amazing. Written by Jordan Raynor, it demonstrates how God began the work of creation and then created us to continue that work. We are each His image-bearer, and we are therefore designed to create. Readers are encouraged to work with joy and purpose as they follow God’s plan for their life, whatever that may be. I love this book because it shows an aspect of God’s heart for His children that isn’t talked about much (creating), and the illustrations are absolutely incredible.

You can buy The Creator In You most place books are sold.

Faith-Based Music

Music has been impactful in my life for many years. I personally play guitar and I’m pretty picky about the type of music we listen to. That being said, the child choirs and Vacation Bible School songs of the 90s just aren’t my favorite music (no judgement if it works for you!). Thankfully, there are so many good options out there nowadays. I would say that music is one of these easiest places to find high-quality faith-based media options. These are my top 4 favorites for kids’ music.

1. Colin Buchanan

Colin Buchanan has a full repertoire of faith-based music, but my favorites are his Old Testament and New Testament albums. He does a great job of both quoting Scripture and retelling Bible stories within his songs. He’s very musically talented and brings an exciting level of fun to the Bible. I love this music because it’s a great way to introduce kids to the Bible while on the go or during playtime.

You can purchase Colin’s music on his website or on most streaming services.

2. Seeds Family Worship

Seeds Family Worship is the standard for Scripture music. They do a wonderful job of combining verses with catchy tunes. They also have hand motion videos to go along with some of their music, which can be a great addition at home or at church. I love this music because it is straight Scripture and pleasant to listen to.

Seeds Family Worship is available as CDs or DVDs on their website, or on most streaming services.

3. Slugs & Bugs

Slugs & Bugs is upbeat, fun, and full of Scripture. They have 9 different albums to choose from, 5 of which are their Sing The Bible series, where they (you guessed it) sing the Bible! They also include a few songs per album that have dialogue or other interesting interludes. I love this music because it sounds like fun music that I want to listen to, not like the soundtrack from Vacation Bible School.

You can buy Slugs & Bugs on their website or on most streaming services.

4. Scripture Lullabies

There can’t be anything better than the Holy Bible soothing you to sleep, right? Scripture Lullabies are absolutely beautiful albums that pair the Word of God with calm and soothing music. They are pleasant for all ages to listen to and usher a special peace into the room. I love this music because my daughters have memorized Scripture while drifting off to sleep.

You can find Scripture Lullabies on their website or on most streaming services.

Other Faith-Based Media Options

1. Seek and Find

There are three books in this series – Old Testament, New Testament, and The First Christmas. Each page spread contains a short retelling of the Bible story, a statement about who God is or what He does based on that Bible story, and then an object to find for each of the numbers one through ten (1 goat, 2 spears, etc.). I love these books because the illustrations are great and it’s a different way to expose your kids to Bible stories while having fun together.

You can buy Seek and Find books on The Good Book Company website or many places books are sold.

2. Clubhouse Magazine

Produced by Focus on the Family, Clubhouse Magazine (and Clubhouse Jr. for younger kids) is a monthly faith-based publication which features stories, puzzles, activities, and more. It reinforces traditional Christian values while providing a clean source of non-digital entertainment. I love this magazine because it’s an exciting way for kids to see biblical concepts and truths displayed in different stories. Plus what kid doesn’t love getting mail?!

Clubhouse is available on the Focus on the Family website.

3. New City Catechism

New City Catechism is a free app designed to teach both adults and kids the core doctrines of the Christian faith through questions and answers. Each question/answer includes a scriptural reference, commentary, prayer, and a song (all optional). I love this app because the songs are fun, the kids mode makes it easy for little ones to memorize, and adults benefit from it just as much as kids.

New City Catechism is available on Android and Apple devices. They also have additional information on their website.

What would you add to this list? Are there any other faith-based media options that your family loves?
